Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is the most famous monument in the United States. It represents freedom. For the immigrants, it signifies a promise of a fair chance at the American dream. The Lady Liberty hold in her left hand the Declaration of Independence and a torch in her right hand to light up the world.
This iconic statue was sculpted by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi while it’s structure was built by the engineer Gustave Eiffel. The Statue of Liberty was inaugurated in October 1886, it was restored in 1986 for it’s 100th birthday. On this occasion, a coat of 24 carat gold was applied on the torch.
The famous statue is 93 meters in height and weighs 225 tons and counts 154 stairs. It is located on Liberty Island and is best seen on the Zephyr cruise.
